From the release notes on the new Elk 4.5.4 firmware:

12. Added support for a new ELKTWA “Two Way Amplifier” product. This product will allow up to three (3) separately
adjustable speaker outputs for use in powering speakers behind or adjacent to keypads for system messages and/or
two-way listen in applications.

Anyone know anything more about this? Looked through the Elk product site and didn't find any info.

I just noticed this as well and would like to know more...
 
The ELKTWA is a new two way listen in and talk back module for the M1. It has three independently controlled audio amplifiers so that the speaker volume in various areas can be equalized. There are three speaker and microphone zones and each zone can handle 4 microphones and when using the 32 ohm SP12F speaker, 8 speakers in parallel in each zone. When two way voice is enabled in the M1, outputs 7,8,9,and 10 are used by the two way voice module.

The module is ready for beta testing waiting on some instructions.
 
Sounds perfect for the application I'm wiring up now with the adjoining building as office spaces.

How can we sign up for one? :)

I was just going to make a comment on how non-flexible the TWI interface is, especially the volume of the speakers in the various rooms (I have young kids and I like the voice announcements, so setting volumes is important to me). Now that's exactly what I would want (I hope the volumes will be programmable by rules). Now, if you make the whole TWI (speaker+mic+electronics at the keypad) either a back option for the KP2 and/or and discrete flush mount kit (like the SP12F), I'd be in Elk nirvana.

Can speakers connected to the talkbalk zones be used for HA messages?
 
On the M1TWA feature set, the three audio output zone's volume is controlled by a potentiometer on the board, but there is a jumper option along with Rules using outputs 11,12, and 13 to mute any of the three audio zones.

The voice announcements and siren sounds are sent out through the M1TWA to the speakers located throughout the premise.

A very limited number of beta test units are available. Request through ELK Sales to beta test an M1TWA.
 
I think i'll send them an email requesting that gcimmino be approved as a beta tester, so he can get his head bloody banging it against the wall to figure out how to make it work. I'll get one after he's worked out the issues, and posted his 30 page how-to guide about it :D

The TWI hookup was fine and the TWA looks like just the right thing for the multi-building application I'm installing now.

Hopefully Elk will appreciate my proofreading skills on their manual too..

To have a night volume and a day volume, I wonder if you can (hum, hum) wire two outputs together and make sure (!) that they are not activated at the same time, and use of for day volume, one for night volume. Or, to be totally safe, use a controlled relay to switch between the two channels.

BTW, if using a relay, does one need to use a double relay like the 924 (one for +, one for -) or - is connected to NEG, so only + need to be switched?

You will need a double pole double throw relay to completely isolate the outputs if you are sending audio from two channels into a speaker. Connect the speaker leads to the common terminals on the DPDT Relay, Normally Open terminals to audio output 1. Normally Closed to audio output 2. You can use two ELK 912 relays in parallel or one ELK 924 DPDT relay.
 
Any availability date for the TWA? I am just finishing my system (in the wall, most modules in and wired...) and I am moving in in a couple of weeks. Should I get a TWI or wait for the TWA? (or beg somebody to get a beta unit if they are stil available - I send sales an email but didn't get an answer).

If the volume control is a pot it should be possible to determine which resistance you want for day/night and toggle between the two resistors with a SPDT relay. Of course soldering to the board would probably void the warranty.
