Trying to get started with Omni Pro II

Hello everyone, my first post here :)

I assist an elderly homeowner with his technology issues. He is quite wealthy, and likes to have the best of everything. In his new home, an electrician has installed an Omni Pro II with outdoor/window/door motion detectors, a Leviton lighting system with UPB (the one that has the blue lights on the rockers) and a Nuvo Grand Concerto audio system. I would like to be able to at least make his Omni Pro II security sensors and his lighting system work together somehow. In a perfect world, I would like to be able to integrate the Nuvo too, but one step at a time, right? :)

At his previous residence, he had an Omni IIe installed, and I was able to log in through a static IP address to configure it at a very basic level, but I'm hopeful that the Omni Pro II has a more accessible user interface for programming. I've looked online and it seems like there are a wide array of software packages that can be used, but I'm not sure of the one that would be most useful.

I appreciate any guidance that you can provide!

You might also check with his installer, as they may provide a copy of the programming software for him/you. (sounds like a decent sized install job, so they might throw it in.)

The thing is the "installer" is just an electrician. He doesn't have any knowledge of the system (I assume this was done to save money). He's basically wired up the motion sensors to the circuit board and connected the UPB module for the lights, and that's it. So I'm on my own here, but I enjoy a challenge.

He still has the Dealer software on his PC from his Omni IIe system. That should still work with the Pro, right? My plan is to connect the Pro to his wireless router via ethernet and then access it via its IP address, as it says in the manual.

I've done a lot of work for him in his old house with his lights using UPStart. Do you know how the lighting settings set through the Pro will work with the settings with UPStart? Do you know which one will override the other in case of conflict?

Thanks so much for your replies--this site is great!

Hi,

I have seen the PC Access software described as working with the Omni and Lumina family - so that would suggest the software he has would work.

I use both the Omni software and Upstart. The Omni handles more advanced programming and other non-UPB devices, UPStart lets you customize the UPB switches themselves.

UPB technology is programmed with UPStart, no matter if you are using an OMNI or not. It can take lots of work to set it up.  Because of this, Leviton created a system called HCL that uses UPB protocol but only fully works with Leviton UPB switches (which it sounds like you have). With HCL, the OMNI panel can program all the switches into a very good system without using UPStart. HCL also monitors the status of scenes which UPB doesn't do itself.

I used UPB in my last house with UPStart, but use HCL in my new house with Leviton switches. I would never go back.  Does the house have room and house controllers with blue buttons?  If so they likely are set to use HCL. You can also use PC Access to see if switches are set to HCL or UPB.  With HCL you still can use UPStart for tweaks, but you rarely need to. If you are set to HCL, you probably won't need UPStart and I'd recommend not to use it unless you know what you are doing.  If you are not using HCL, then you have to use UPStart to program the switches.

Note HCL only works with newer Omni firmware but not very old firmware.

Just now finally getting back to work on this. This is a great presentation--thank you so much.

Worthington Distributors/ASI Home has a great presentation on UPB and HCL. You can view it here: http://www.asihome.com/ASIshop/manuals/test/Worthington%20HLC%20Training.pdf

Look at slides 43 - 45 for instructions on how to have the OP II program the switches for you.  In HCL mode, the panel can program the switches for you.  With "plain" UPB, you must do this in UpStart.

Your welcome.  Realize that HCL is not just another way of using UPB, but its also a fully thought-out way of deploying UPB in a house. Yes you generally have to follow their rules but if you do, the panel keeps in sync with all your switches. Not using HLC with UPB is a bit like buying a PC and not running Windows. If you  are planning to use HomeSeer or CQC, you can probably achieve what HCL does with a bunch of work, but if you are only using an Omni, HCL is the way to go.
