This is probably the issue.  So with the ELK came a serial to ethernet adapter which then I plugged that in and didnt think twice about it.  I guess my next question would be is what is the pin out for the serial port on the M1XSP.

Yes what you were told is true.  All you need is one "master Muti Switch" to control up to 8 different locations.  They dont have to be in the same room or near each other.  UPB works by sending a signal from sensor A to find switch B or G or Q or whatever and toggles that switch on and off...
