    Powerline Ethernet power meter

Looking to analyze power usage via powerline Ethernet rather than wirelessly. Anyone know of either a powerline Ethernet adapter with smart features or a smart receptacle based on PLC?

POE camera & NVR advice & recommendations

Been out-of-the-loop security tech-wise for a while... looking for advice on POE cameras for home use and NVR options.  Would rather spend the $ up front for on-site NVR than cloud-based subscription unless there is a very good reason for home use.  I currently have a Synology DiskStation and...

And Work2Play... I see you live in NorCal... I know an alarm company I can recommend to avoid ;)

    continuity & repair recommendations

Problem solved.  Great ideas guys... hopefully I won't need any new equipment.  I had tried newalarm and DEL's suggestion of toning the line previously, as I stated earlier, but with no luck.  Then I decided on a whim to tone it from the other end since (the contact end) to see if it made a...

    continuity & repair recommendations

Tried that, but can't note any distinct change in volume of the tone in the wall near the switch location. I can absolutely the tone and trace the wire, but cannot hear a change in the tone that would indicate a break. Is that normal? Continuity fails, DMM resistance shows open circuit as well...

    continuity & repair recommendations

Not sure if that is where the problem is... there is about 12" of slack in the line at the window, but no apparent damage (I've already pulled the reed switch and tested that separately).  I'm not sure how I would pinpoint where the break is without cutting into the wall, but If I had to place a...

    continuity & repair recommendations

Finally getting around to installing an alarm on a prewired house I moved into a few years ago.  Long story short, I'm down to a single wiring/sensor problem and there is no continuity (confirmed with DMM and probe/continuity tester).  The prewire install was lazy (pigtails connected by twisting...

    M1PCSPIM vs ISY

Agreed... I was talking about the ISY with UPB firmware vs the PCSPIM... anyone know the differences?

    M1PCSPIM vs ISY

If going with insteon, the ISY seems the way to integrate with the M1G. Seems there are two options if I go the UPB route: ISY and M1PCSPIM. What are the significant differences between the two?

Help with system to build on

I'm about to purchase an M1G system for security (initially) and HA (over the next 2 yrs). Home is prewired for alarm (windows, doors, motion, fire, 2 or 3 panels). As a start, I'd like to get a basic alarm working that can be checked and remotely armed via iphone (preferably programmed as...

    Smarthome or Hometech opinions?

Looking at M1G system prices from authorized dealers. Looks like Elk has a strict MAP policy for the systems (e.g. M1GSYS4 @ $679). I've seen some mention that AO will give a discount to cocooners if you call them and mention it. Also noticed that piecing together a system is sometimes...

    Integrated vs Separates

Feel like I'm having an audio discussion here, but I thought the title was appropriate ;) Anyway, I have been leaning toward the Elk M1G over the HAI Omni for security and home automation... my plan is to start with basic security, add some basic lighting/scene management over the next year...

    simple post-prewire question

about to go down the path of DIY (probably elk m1g) for security and automation with a prewired house. The prewire (as most) did not install magnets for the reed switches. I have a DMM to test continuity so I can decode the cryptic labels for the 43 wires in the junction box in my closet, but...

M1G Z-wave or UPB status feedback

Can't remember where I read it, but the m1g can get lighting status if you use the leviton serial interface controller (VRC0P-1LW) through the elk serial expander (m1xsp) rather than using the elk z-wave interface. edit: the leviton controller will soon be compatible with the zwave locks...
