    T8 LED Fixtures

Costco is selling 4' "twin tube" LED shoplight type fixtures for 35.99 or so. My neighbor loaned me one to test out. The tubes are not replaceable, no switch, they can't  be hardwired without some surgery.  And they're ugly.   Costco also sells 4' LED replacement tubes for 36.99 a pair.   Found...

    Security Screens

I recently installed security screens on my shop building.   These screens have heavyweight aluminum frames, 12x12 per inch stainless steel mesh screening, and swing open for cleaning and emergency exit.  They are installed on the outside of the building and create a protective "bubble" over the...

    Elk missing keypad

Rudely awakened at 2am this morning by a missing keypad #4 trouble.   Went back to normal but it keeps reoccuring.   Keypad seems to function OK.   This keypad is in the garage.  It was cold last night, 30 according to weather.com, but not as cold yet as it was last winter.  Don't think its in...

    Elk speaker wiring to outbuilding

The shop is about 150' cable run from the main panel.   The house currently has the main speaker and 2 keypad speakers.  Not even sure if I need the Elk audio in the shop, but what's the recommended way, if any, to extend the speaker wiring?  Add a speaker amp at the panel?  In the shop?

    tool caddy

These are great for tossing a bunch of tools in and taking it to where you're working, or you can build portable kits for different jobs (networking, electrical, sprinklers, etc) with tools and basic supplies. Home Depot seems to be clearing these out of the stores at $3.97 each, but you can buy...

    ELK brute force attack

A week or so ago there was a post about the XEP security, and which commands required a user code.  Very few.   But interestingly enough, some of those commands respond and tell you if the user code is valid.   See where I'm headed?   Sorry about the line spacing.  I pasted the .pl file into the...

    smartphone recommendations?

Any recommendations for a sub $300 smartphone?   The wife wants to dump AT&T contract and go with a T-Mobile no contract.  She also wants a smartphone.  I'm OK with a dumbphone, but it makes sense to get a couple of identical smartphones for us. She saw the LG Optimus F6 at the T-mobile store...

    Post editor

Does the posting editor act flaky for other people?  I'm using firefox.   Sometimes I'll hit the delete key and one or more lines will get wiped out.   It seems to happen mostly when something is pasted into the editor.

    elkm1::control and elkrp

I setup elkm1::control and its working, but (always a but) ...   When RP is connected, it stops displaying most of the messages (i.e. zone changes, etc).   When the RP is disconnected, the messages start again.   Is this known behavior and/or is there a way around it?

    ELK M1XEP email revealed

I spent the morning screwing around trying to get the email to work.  I finally got it to work, but not the way I really wanted it to.  The main issue is that there's no way to diagnose the problem if the email doesn't get sent.  Several times I was pretty sure I wasn't even making a TCP...

ELK and old Sentrol glass breaks

The previous alarm system (whatever it was) used these Sentrol glass break sensors. They are mounted right at the window.   Can they be used with the ELK?

    ELK 912 wire capacity

I can't find any info on what's the max size wire that will fit in the ELK 912 relay terminals.   Will they accept a #12 or #14 solid?

    Elk 150RT Siren Woes

M1G new install.  Control powers up, keypad works.   Speaker connected to Out1 works.    ELK 150RT siren is connected to Out2. Siren is recognized, i.e. no violation on Out2.   Global G26 (Out2 voltage) is set to "yes".   The siren constantly makes a  low volume whine.  It sometimes changes...

Elk M1G new install - keypad location

I'll start installing an M1G next week (new house, some existing wiring). Does it make sense to have an extra keypad in the wiring closet?

    airport security

Just venting ... Yesterday I got stopped in the Atlanta airport after I got irradiated. Screener - Is there anything in your left pocket? Me - No. Screener - Are you sure? Me - Check pocket. I find a tiny scrap of paper from a life saver roll. I give him the "are you f-ing kidding me" look...

    Hub in attic?

Right now my hub is in the uninusulated garage and temps get to 100F-110F. I'm thinking about moving it into the attic to clean up the wiring. Temps up there can get to 120F-130F. Think that'll be an issue?

    SatTV wiring

Its time to dump cable and get something "better". I'm asking these questions here because I'll probably get a more accurate and honest response from knowledgeable people such as yourselves (<< ego booster to encourage responses :) ) than calling the providers. Since I'm doing some work in...

    Lowe's Tax Refund Card

I haven't seen this mentioned here, and today (3/14/2010) is the last day for it. Get a tax refund gift card at Lowe's and they'll add 10% on 3/18/2010. Where else can you get 10% tax free on your money? Get some 10% off coupons from ebay and its a heck of a deal.
