    Can't access WebControl anymore

So I had a lightning hit fairly near the house a while ago that cooked a couple things... had to replace a cable modem, but everything else on the network seemed to survive ok.   I just recently realized my WebControl stopped responding on the network and I'm trying to figure out if it's toast...

Quick electrical question on DC dummy load

I'm a software geek, so I like to make odd choices if I get a learning experience with circuitry out of it. :) Well, that and I don't have wires all over my dash to plug into the front of the radio if I go this route.

Quick electrical question on DC dummy load

Morning all, I have an older first gen XM radio in my car that I'm tired of coaxing to change channels, so I'm switching to a newer one that the wife just abandoned because her new car has XM built in. A long time ago, I plunked down 70 or so dollars for a box that both powered my radio and...

The Weather Channel API - Now requires a subscription.

I discovered the WUnderground API last week (which is awesome, btw) and have been coding a free-as-in-beer HS plugin in my spare time... should be done by next weekend if I can get work to stop breaking things. Even if nobody else uses it, I will. :)

How to search on 3 letter words?

Use Google with this search (obviously you'll want to substitute your own 3 letter acronym): HAI "http://www.cocoontech.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=" site:www.cocoontech.com

Did you guys see this tripe?

I didn't see this in a search, so... I know this is a little dated, but someone presented a bit on Hacking home automation systems at DefCon 2011. Most of the articles refer to how vulnerable X10 is (which is a joke to anyone that's ever used it... of COURSE it's vulnerable, ask anyone who's...

Hacking a Firecracker module for the CAI WebControl

That's exactly right, and it all makes sense to me now. The WebControl leaves the TTL7 output high the entire time to act as Vdd for the IC, and then the transmitter is toggled via TTL8 - based on whatever house code/unit code you've told it to transmit. Très Cool. I went down the rabbit hole...

Hacking a Firecracker module for the CAI WebControl

Hm, ok... So do I have to leave the card attached to the DB9 shell or can I just wire it directly to the WebControl? If we're keeping what was previously the RTS and GND pins, does the new diode on IC pin 5 take the place of the brown wire that was the DTR signal?

Hacking a Firecracker module for the CAI WebControl

I happened to be on the CAI website a while back and discovered that they now have X-10 support cooked into the 3.1.x PLC firmware. That got me pretty fired up, because I have a project that would be easily solved by the WebControl blasting out X-10, rather than waiting for the time (and lower...

    Kwikset deadbolt experiences

I have similar performance, on plain old Duracell Alkaline coppertops... too lazy to look for the date at the moment, but I pre-ordered 2 deadbolts from ASIHome and I've only had to replace the batteries once in the front door because it gets a LOT of activity. The back door is still running on...

    SH cracks me up

I happened to be in Irvine for business a while back and thought I'd swing into their retail store while I was in town... what a joke. 1) The woman running the register completely ignored me the entire time I was in there - not even a basic acknowledgement like "hello." 2) The store seems to...

    Whole house audio

I have been hankering to try out this $700 HTD controller/amp for 6 sources/6 zones for a while now, but I just haven't gotten around to it yet. I don't have speaker runs yet, and I definitely don't want to do local volume keypads in a retrofit (even though it supports them), so the RS-232...

    x10 is shutting down

I actually kill the AC (RCS TS40) if any window or door is open more than 5 minutes, and pop up messages on the Windows Media Center as to why (if it's on). The WAF went way up when she can just decide to enjoy the fresh air and not have to think about the AC.

    x10 is shutting down

Haha, now you're going to make me go back and get MORE DS10/12s... can you share what you haggled it down to?
