    CableCard for HTPC

I spent about 40 hours trying to get a Tivo HD to work right, never happened. This cablecard stuff is crazy. I think you may need 2 tuning adapters if you get the quad tuner card. They are free from my cable company as well. At least the first one.

Leviton says max 30-35 devices for reliable ViziaRF Z-Wave network.

I agree with this. And although HS is a competitor, tink was also helping to share info, which can only help everyone. Otherwise I suspect the thread would not go very far. I could be wrong, but I am guessing that the solutions to this is way over most of our heads. The problems are at a...

    Upcoming change in CQC pricing

Seems to me that for the most part this is all good for the existing users. For relatively distant future DIY users, this is just the price of doing business. For those on the fence, it is nice to hear that Dean is giving a heads up so they can act now. There will be a small portion, such as...

    CableCard for HTPC

Yeah, its the same card that goes in a Tivo. I am surprised about they are saying about cable cards. I am pretty sure they are REQUIRED to support them by law.

    CableCard for HTPC

Just in case you don't know, Ceton has a new quad tuner cable card tuner that works with windows media center. You can pre-order it at zones.com or cannonpc.com for $399. I have ordered mine.

Leviton says max 30-35 devices for reliable ViziaRF Z-Wave network.

Tink, Thanks for the great info. I seem to remember much of this being discussed in the recent HS webinar as well. Most of it is way over my head at this point. So from the end user perspective, is the following true? - Z-wave is well implemented in HomeSeer. That's the good news. -...

I don't understand this HA panel thing

I get the powerline stuff for the most part. Does the software just need to be connected to the panel and then i don't need to worry about what happens on the other side? For example, as long as I have any zwave controller on the panel then the software will work with it? So for example, I...

I don't understand this HA panel thing

I only interface my components directly to my comp and not that interested in security. But are there other reasons to get a panel? Not too worried about battery backup since 90% interface with the pc so if it goes down, I'm done anyway. But here is the thing. Been wanting to give z-wave a...

    Upcoming change in CQC pricing

Zac, I wonder the about the same things and posted that earlier in the thread. The long learning curve combined with the new price structure (well over 1k for a competent system) will scare off a lot of DIY users. That has to have a downstream effect, doesn't it? My problem is that I need...

    HA Software Options

Thought I would update on my "progress". I have been comparing CQC, HS, and J9 head to head for some time (not nearly as much with CQC though). I decided to buy HomeSeer the other day since I was already "in bed" with it. It is OK for the most part. Nothing is great about it, nothing...

    Upcoming change in CQC pricing

I do see the problem. Help me on the math though. You say it was 1/4th the price for the DIY, but you are now going to double it and everyone pays the same price. So you are cutting the pro version in half? Confusing to me. So if the DIY market is nearly zero, what do you get out of it...

    Upcoming change in CQC pricing

Dean, -All good points, makes sense. I did not realize the DIY market was *that* small. -I wonder why the pros are so concerned about the DIY guy? Is the DIY guy really a likely to go to a pro anyway? So whats the big deal? Isn't their real competition really other pro software anyway...

    Upcoming change in CQC pricing

Yeah, with good alternatives, I wonder if this pushes the DIY towards those alternatives and CQC becomes primarily a professional product. I suppose this has good and bad. I wonder though if the net effect is bad for both DIY and pros? Don't DIY guys also contribute a lot at the same time...

    Upcoming change in CQC pricing

Something I was thinking. Is if fair to say CQC has steepest learning curve of its DIY competitors? It seems so to be for me. Therefore, its a natural fit for a pro since once you are doing it day in and day out, the learning curve doesn't really matter. But for a DIY guy, the fact that...

    HA Software Options

Glad you did not take that the wrong way. I think there is a good chance that j9 will be the best option in the near future for many people. Probably just have to keep down the path you are going and I don't see the others being able to compete for new DIY users. Sure there are always niche...

    HA Software Options

I think it is only sold through x10 via a package deal. But I don't know that MY OPINION about j9 has changed too much. The iTunes driver seems to have problems with playlists as we talked about. It could very well be that my particular hardware setup is troublesome for j9. The three things...

    HA Software Options

The j9 support forum seems very inactive, I am quite surprised since the product looks very promising. In my tests it was so buggy though that it did not even look to be viable. I don't think I want to be a beta tester so while the curbside appeal is real nice for j9, I think cqc has it where...

    HA Software Options

The whole time I was thinking "you've got to be kidding me" while working in cqc. Just made no sense and seems overly complex to do simple functions. But it seems solid at the same time and I kinda think homeseer is a bit "hokey". Though hstouch is quite nice. I am pretty interested in j9...

    HA Software Options

Tried out J9AE. Wow, it is super intuitive and pretty easy to use. I REALLY like the feel of this program. Bad news is that my CM15a driver kept saying it had an error and various other bugs seemed to be present. I think it will take some time before this becomes a viable choice, but I could...
