    Home network

Just looking for some advice on setting up a better home network. Currently I have a cable modem which goes to a Linksys wireless router. All of the wired connections are being used and we have two laptops that can access it. It is using the software that came with it. The software is...

    More LED bulb options

Menards has par30 LEDs for $13. I'm not sure about the quality but for that price, I think I'm going to try some. http://www.menards.com/main/lighting-fans/light-bulbs/led/c-7482.htm

    Thank You!!!!

I want to thank Cocoontech and CQC for the Christmas present! I've spent the last week reading everything I could on CQC and it's time to get started trying to install the program onto a computer. I've read so much and watched the videos, I'm thoroughly confused but ready to start learning...

    Fog detector?

What about some kind of light meter? It wouldn't matter what was making the light appear dimmer to the meter (smoke, fog) you would want the light to be brighter. I couldn't find anything that had any kind of output, they all just had an LCd display when I searched for them....

    Securing outside A/C unit

What about just leaving the power turned on to the unit? If you locked the outside shut off box, it would make it harder for one to disconnect it w/o consequences.

Garage Door Opener - Signal Issues

I saw a similar thing once too. The volunteer fire station in one town was pretty much at the end of the airport runway. We kept finding the door open and kept blaming somebody until it opened once on the fireman during a meeting and they heard the plane and figured it out.

Garage Door Opener - Signal Issues

The built in opener in our minivan is touchy. You have to push the button just right and hold it for about second. It's one of those things....once your used to it it's not a problem. The range is also less than the handheld opener, but it is convenient being built in. I also had to...

    Securing a sliding patio door?

Sorry, a little off topic, but hopefully useful--- Sliding doors are about the easiest for someone to force open. While it's about the most low tech way to secure anything, putting a stick/dowel rod in the track will keep someone from sliding it open. Some of the doors are designed to be...

    Show me your flood sensor

You might also consider sealing the hole where the pipe goes out. That's probably how the cold got in to freeze it.

    Water sensors

Thats why you need to take the hoses off, to keep from trapping water in the part of the valve exposed to the cold. Sometimes they still freeze though, at least with the water off, the damage is limited to the water left in the line (until spring when you turn the water back on).

    Electrical Safety

I think anywhere it is in close proximity to water they use a GFCI. My fridge has an icemaker, I'm guessing thats why it got put on that circuit, I wish it was on its own.

    Electrical Safety

Half of my kitchen is fed through a GFCI near the counter top. The other half-including the refrigerator and lights- is fed from the GFCI located below the electrical panel in the basement. That took me a awhile to find the first time. Both bathrooms (including the lights) share the same...

    Your OS choice is stupid...

For some reason "Linux" always makes me think of a boy that carries his blanket with him everywhere?

    Your OS choice is stupid...

My first was the Commodore 64 too. Best computer ever, because all I ever did with it was play games :) I've hated each of the versions of Windows equally, but I can get them to work. All the other ones I've tried to use based on others recommendations I never have figured out. Everytime I...

What do you do when your alarm goes off in the middle of the night?

I would think it is better to call 911 yourself, rather than let the alarm company do it, you can probably provide the dispatcher more information than they can. Also, please put the gun away before the police arrive. They don't want to be met at the door by a guy holding a pistol (it's...
