    CocoonTech turns 20!

X10? ... I had always thought your name was styled after BSR, the originator of that artform. That is where I started, just before X10 must have bought them. I still had many of their modules until I moved last year.

    Add CD player to auto?

I think the USB dongle has to be the thing. Need to print pretty picture stickers on it to please the wife. Another thing that seems to be taking over is the BT from the cell phone music library to the vehicle sound system, home soundbar, Alexa, GH boxes etc.. etc.. Then when you want an...

Wiring question -- should I provide additional protection?

It is quite hard to protect devices typically. However in a sensitive location the first trick is metal encasement for preventing fire spread. If desired, a fuse with a lower rating than the breaker would be appropriate, sized for your wiring. However, with relay coils and motors use a time...

Anyone using Z-Wave 800 series hardware yet?

I would think it is more about the surrounding radio noise also. With a rural setting containing hardly any other Zwave the tested range indicates IMHO to about 20-30m in a city environment with so many cell phones, PS adapters, WiFi and electric motors putting out RFI. Never going to happen in...

Storm knocked out all connection to the world - thinking small solar to power things and some radios

During a storm there will not be any solar power, maybe after, in a disaster. Batteries would be the only source and a simple grid based charger would be the simplest and cheapest. Consideration needs to be given if the outage covers a larger area, there may no be any mobile tower system...

    Smoke detector location

If you place one anywhere near your kitchen you may need to get a visible smoke unit as the ionised air ones will go off everytime you turn on a gas burner or push the toaster down. They don't trigger on visible smoke but the ionisation of the air from the flames or heat.

    Dimmable LED bulbs

WiFi bulbs. They dim right down to 1% without any flicker. I have been finding all dimmable bulbs disapearing from Home Depot, Lowes, Walmart and Home Hardware stores in Canada.

Looking for VOIP providers compatible with Microsoft, etc

I am running into a similar thing with one of my bank accounts. They require a native (not third party) email account for 2FA. I don't have an email account with my ISP so I have no online access to my account.

Looking for VOIP providers compatible with Microsoft, etc

I started out with a $10 Ooma credit to cover International calls from Canada. After about 6 years I still have more than $5 left at which point it will automatically "top-up" for the first time from my credit card. The best part about Ooma phone connections when I quit my 40 year old Bell...

Tablet as display/input for home control?

I have a few Echo Shows. I find other's 5" Show not worth the effort, but I have two 8" Shows that can do all that, plus the side features of current weather, statistics from Wikipedia and total home control via my polISY box that supports most of my lighting levels, timing and colours and air...

    Lightning got all my Omnistats

I would be wondering where the second point of ground was to prevent this from happening again and again after fixing everything. Stats should be a completely floating electrical system that shouldn't transmit high voltage, high frequency, electrical shots because they should have no place to...

Roku 4k stick vs express 4k?

I have known about 3 Firesticks with other people and they all had to be rebooted once per night due to overheating.

Roku 4k stick vs express 4k?

Get the wired Roku. I have three models in a box somewhere and the wired one was far superior. Strangely enough my Roku+ would not talk to my ASUS router on 5GHz band despite both being close to the ceiling about 10' apart. The WiFi units will downshift the resolution without warning if any lack...

    USB Power Options

I've been using the longer white USB cables down to a receptacle lately. White matches the trim and some stickdown cable tie bases to keep the runs tight and straight for best looks. Many time they can be run along the sides of trim, and window frames to make them less obnoxious or invisible...

    State of the UPB market?

Looks nice! How many different commands can the dimmers put out? Do they support variable speed ramping or at least soft start style on and/or off? Is there an available API for users to write interfacing bridging to home automation systems?

printer test page to prevent inkjet drying out

I prefer the Brother units due to more user friendly GUIs etc. but the mian issue is make sure you can get generic toner cartridges on amazon or ebay. The manufacturers cartridges will cost you more than the printer is worth and will not print as many pages. As an example for my Brother...

printer test page to prevent inkjet drying out

Best thing I ever did was to get a colour laser printer, after paying for 4 or 5 inkjet printers as well as 15-20 ink cartridges. The $300 I spent on a Brother wireless laser printer over the last ten years has been far cheaper than all the inkjet junk I have wasted money on. (about $3-4K) For...
