    Recruiting for Alexa Smart Home

Hey all,   Just want to preface this that I have permission from Dan to post here.   You all may know or recognize me as a long-time member of the community.  I've been a member here since 2006.  My introduction to home automation has been well-documented in my blog.  I started out with UPB...

    would these work...

These Contact Closure Probelincs (http://www.smarthome.com/8018/Contact-Closure-ProbeLinc/p.aspx) look like they have the same termination that the Global Cache contact closure sensors have. Anyone care to posit a guess on whether these would work with my GC unit?

    God Bless America

So, I'm interested to get a wide range of opinions on this, and I know this board has all types, both religiously and politically. Why are we required to stand and take our hat off for God Bless America? It is not our national anthem. The last time I was at a ball game, I stood up (it was the...

    wall wart help

I bought a couple of AMX Video Sync Sensors a while back, and they have phoenix connectors to the power supply. The manual says: Power Supply 12 VDC at 20 mA Power Consumption 2.4 W maximum The manual can be found at: http://www.amx.com//techdocs/0421100.pdf I suppose I could get a wall...

how to measure the on/off status of my video source selector?

So, I recently bought a used AMX PCS2 power current sensor to detect the on/off status of my television and video source selector (or video switch, if you like). It worked fine for the TV, but I couldn't (and still can't) get it to work with the video switch. so, i took out my trusty...

    Contact Closure Sensors

Does anyone know where I can find something similar to a GC-SC1 (http://www.automatedoutlet.com/product.php?productid=1414&cat=0&page=1), that is, a contact closure sensor that I could plug into my Global Cache, but that doesn't cost $40 (yes, $40!)? The Global Cache unit only has 3 native...

problem with rs485 communication with rcs tr16 through m1xsp

So, some weird stuff happened to me over the past week. The plenum on one of my air conditioners fell off the main unit (I don't know why), and pulled some of the wiring that was strung underneath it so that some wires got pulled out of the TR16 central box. It resulted in my ElkRM showing all...

can composite sensors sense component video?

http://www.amx.com/products/VSS2.asp I have someone offering me one of the AMX VSS2 video sensor, but it only has jacks for composite video. Does anyone know if I could hook up one channel of my component video cables to this and achieve the same result?

    looking at serial communications

Yesterday, at 4 AM, my three thermostats stopped communicating with the Elk. I seem to recall seeing on the board somewhere Spanky giving us a secret way to look at the serial communications in real time, but I can't seem to find it. Looking at these would give me a good idea of where the...

    What are those things called?

What are those things called that you actually screw wires into on for Elk zones? They're the little green pieces that is actually where you screw your wires down, and I believe they're removable. I'd like to know what they're called so I can find a new one.

    EXIT ERROR

Today, my wife left the house and armed the alarm. 7 minutes later, the alrm went off. The Elk log shows EXIT ERROR, a zone violation, and subsequent burglar alarm. Does anybody know what might have caused that exit error and subsequent alarm?

    current sensing

Can someone explain to me, as I'm no electrical engineer, how I would use a current transducer/sensor like those by CR Magnetics to detect the state on my tv or other home theater part. They have a lot listed with different specs, so how would I know which one I need? I do have a Global Cache...

First 802.11n webcam on the horizon

http://www.marketwire.com/press-release/D-...Inc-934763.html Obviously, it requires an 802.11n router with WPS support, but it says it specifically targets mobile 3G connections, so hopefully they have a client for that. I don't know why they even mention a wired version... that's just another...

low light, medium distance, high res camera help

So, behind my house is about 40 feet worth of driveway, an alley, a 6' fence, 50 feet of parking lot and an apartment complex. I've had enormous amounts of trouble with the apartment complex, ranging from throwing trash over the fence, to shooting bb's through my daughter's window, and most...

    What's the #$@#$ point??

So I got a call this morning from NextAlarm (great service by the way... can't say enough good things about them) that one of my motion detectors tripped and my alarm was activated, would I like for them to dispatch police? Of course I would, they can get there a lot faster than I can. So we...

    Neighborhood-wide monitoring

with another recent spate of neighborhood break-ins, the HOA is finally open to exploring the idea of neighborhood cameras to monitor activity, particularly during the day when most people are at work (so, night time visibility for cameras is typically less important). can anybody make any...
