    Is Charmed Quark gone?

Does anyone have a link to the last installer (I think it was 6.0.2)? I have been wanting to give it a try since I remember Dean opening it up but never got around to it. I hate it had to go down this way for him, it really seemed like he poured his life into CQC. Terry

Moving HA from Ubuntu 20.04 to Oracle VB

Just run Supervised on Debian. I too fought it for the longest time; not because I had a problem with Debian, but because EVERYTHING I did was on Ubuntu. I didn’t want to run their all-in version on stripped Alpine Linux so I finally bit the bullet and reinstalled on the latest Debian. It’s been...

In need of a new router

Another vote for pfSense. I’ve ran it for more years than I can remember and never an issue. For my latest built I bought this: https://www.ebay.com/itm/Supermicro-1U-Firewall-Server-X10SLH-N6-1x-E3-1231V3-4GB-RAILS-PfSense-/174093260810 And added 2 SSDs and bumped the RAM to 8gb. It came with...

Can Somebody Explain What This Does?

That’s a mainboard and enclosure from pcengines. I run the same thing as a pfsense box. Lots of power and reliable as a toaster, good choice on the hardware front. Terry Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Cheap way to detect power failure? Codger needs ideas

Other than what USM posted, check the back of your UPS. Some of the rackmount data center units will have terminals on the back that go to a relay to provide a switch closure on power fail. Love the story BTW, I’m almost 51 and the state of the 20 and 30 something males in my neighborhood make...

Alexa outside - how to secure it

Yeh even if they did get the Dot functioning, the most they could do is turn on the lights or change the music or HVAC, no automated door locks here and the garage doors are unknown to Alexa. Also, this is Alabama so there’s a really good chance you’ll get your dumb ass shot LOL. Sent from my...

Alexa outside - how to secure it

They could, but they’d need a ladder and a screwdriver - and by then the cameras would have them and the back gate opening would have sounded the alarm ;-) Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Alexa outside - how to secure it

Just plug it into a controlled outlet and only activate it when you’re outside, using whatever ruleset/sensors/control suites your family. That’s how mine is, I have a button on an Insteon KPL in the kitchen at back porch door that turns on/off the outlet that powers the outside dot. We just...

    Streaming TV experience Hulu-Youtube-DirecTV Now

I tried all of those over a year ago, but ultimately decided on Playstation Vue because of the DVR, number of streams and channels that we watch. Back the. I don’t remember anything negative about the quality of any of them, just that PSVue was a better fit for us. That being said, rarely with...

Premise Premise vs Home Assistant and openHAB

123 have you tried loading AppDaemon on your HA instance yet? My understanding is that it allows one to write logic using Python instead of trudging through YAML. I haven’t yet tried it as I’m in a “just playing with it” stage of Home Assistant, but it does seem to have the capabilities to get...

Tangible Difference CQC vs Homeseer for average DIY

I don’t really have a dog in the fight as I use Indigo on a Mac platform - however, I do own a license for Homeseer Pro and have tried to use it through the years... I find it to be buggy and unreliable to be honest. They support a crap-ton of stuff, but it feels to me that they care more about...

    DirectTV Now

Another option, if you aren’t married to the idea of Directv Now, is to try PlayStation Vue, Sling, or Hulu which all have DVR capability built in. I’ve tried all of them but have been using PSVue for about 6 months now. I coupled that with a Tablo for watching and recording locals and have been...

Anyone want to guess where automation is going?

No API that I know of, at least not for the stock firmware. Changing to Tasmota or one of the others available gives these little things tons of features. Yep, that's the inline one. There are lots of resources in the wild for the sonoff switches, you should find a wealth of info once you start...

Anyone want to guess where automation is going?

The cheap, open switches are here now, well $15 ones anyway. I haven't tried the wall switches, but the inlines work great when reflashed with Tasmota firmware. https://www.itead.cc/smart-home/sonoff-touch.html Terry Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Was HA more fun when everybody wasn't doing it?

I hear ya, the Alabama heat and humidity is bad enough on it's own, crawling into the attic after 8:00am is just asking for a slow, painful death! I've been ding less-and-less lately, mainly because we know we're going to move next year, so I'll start the process of pulling out and getting the...

Was HA more fun when everybody wasn't doing it?

I think it was, at least for me. Back when it was thought that only the super rich could automatically switch on lights, music, or have a home theater, it was lots of fun to cobble together bits of random stuff and say "Oh yeh? Well look at this!" These days with everything "IoT" and such...

CQC? HomeSeer? Control4? Creston? Mi Casa Verde? What to choose?

Indigo and Homeseer both have plugins for Caseta, I believe OpenHAB does as well. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

monitor the salt level in a water softener

Perhaps you didn't read the whole article, but the link you reference not only uses HA, but specifically uses Homeseer. Those sensors work great BTW. My original one (that inspired that article) still works well. I don't use it for a water softener, but it's still working well years later...
