    Garage Door Monitor Options

A friend asked me how he could monitor his garage door when away. His house is older but he has Internet service.     I thought about the Insteon solution (works for me) but that would require a PLM & ISY or Insteon Hub(?).  Don't think he'd be interested in that.  He knows how to build some...

    System Restorals(random resets)

WOW!   How to you connect to your ELK?  Do you use a M1EXP?

    a question about Zones

And not to contradict elvisimprsntr, it is alright to put an interior door, say the one accessing your garage, on a zone.  I'd keep overhead garage doors on separate zones as well.  Interior doors can be monitored in a way that will sound the alarm if opened while Away or Vacation, but nothing...

    Fail to Communicate

I am surprised a search produced no hits on this topic.  My ELK keypad alternately displays these messages on the lower line:   pg 1 date & system time   pg 2 House   pg 3 FAIL to COMMUNICATE   I assume this "failure" message is because the system is trying to communicate via phone and gets no...

    Tech Advice Requested Old System

Hi, A few years ago my wife & I bought a vacation home and the place came with a Vista 10P Security panel and Honeywell Ademco 6150 keypad, installed by ADT. The system is currently not being monitored by ADT and I have no idea how long it’s been disconnected.  However, I do not want to pay for...

    Arming in STAY vs. AWAY

As I understand things, this is how the Arm Away works, as RAL explained.  I have a similar issue.  When I exit my house to the garage, if there is not the close/open/close sequence with that door (Z3) during the countdown, AND an close/open/close or open/close with 1 of the force exits (Z1 &...

    Garage Door Control

I have a similar application controlling my lighting when I want to work in the garage. If I just pop into the garage, turn lights on but not off when I leave, a timer will shut them off.  I also have a single overhead light with a simple motion switch.   That was annoying as H--- when I...

    Elk thermostat suggestions

If you have the ISY, why use ELK triggers?  Home automation programming is more powerful and versatile in the ISY than using ELK rules.  Plus you're opened up to other t-stat options.   I have an older Venstar Insteon t-stat that has been pretty much bullet proof.  I do not even use the program...

Elk M1XEP Update for Windows 10 Fails

Issue RESOLVED:  Apparently if you want to upgrade your M1XEP software to work with Win10, be sure your ELKRP software version is the latest.  Their website doesn't state this, but my network communication was lost until I downloaded and updated the ELKRP to ver 2.0.24.   EDIT: I used a Win7 PC...

Elk M1XEP Update for Windows 10 Fails

I was able to contact ELK Tech support. One Tech commented that because I was a home owner (& not a professional installer/distributor) they were not supposed to be helping me.  But they did! Total phone time was probably less than 15 minutes.   After some discussions and system reboots and...

Elk M1XEP Update for Windows 10 Fails

OK was able to do that, but have the same result: rejected access code.   I did not see anything in the update notes that suggests a new access code is required.

Elk M1XEP Update for Windows 10 Fails

How do I do that?  All these years I thought I WAS the administrator.  There is really only one account that was set up for the house. If it would help, here are the settings in my ELKRP account.  https://flic.kr/p/BSUvPv   These are unchanged from earlier yesterday when I could log on.  I...

Elk M1XEP Update for Windows 10 Fails

That is the code on my ELKRP account which worked fine prior to the upgrade.   The M1XEP finder can find the IP address, & my port is set according to directions. I think something in the firmware is restricting access.

Elk M1XEP Update for Windows 10 Fails

I meticulously followed the instructions to update the bootware, then firmware on my M1XEP so that it is compatible with Win10.  I used a Win7 PC to do this from the ELKRP.     http://www.elkproducts.com/m1xep-version2-firmware   Now, when the ELKRP cannot connect to the ELK and I get an error...

    ELK M1 Low Battery

I purchased my system in 2011 and today I'm seeing a Low Battery indication on the keypad screen.  Should I expect just a few years service from the backup battery on the M1?  If all I have to do is replace it to remove the message, does anyone have a suggestion where the best place is to buy a...

New M1 Gold Install - Assistance With Equipment Placement & Power

To answer your questions, here is my two cents: 1.  While I do not know what your sensors are,  the Elk is very limited in the power it can supply.  So you alternative may be to use the wall warts for each sensor or use a PC power supply to do all this. 2.  The 28" cabinet is not adequate.  I...

    Elk M1 Keypad Recommendations

I get by with one KP2 keypad located near the front entry.  My ISY home controller does the rest.  A simple button press near my garage door triggers things in motion to arm the system for away mode.  Another press can also cancel the action.   I also use my smartphone or notebook PC to...

What's a good Blu Tooth Receiver

Anyone have suggestions on a good Blu tooth receiver I can plug into my home audio system.   I have been using a deactivated Razr cell phone but there are limitations, like streaming is sometimes interrupted and the volume control is very limited.  I purchased a cheap ass receiver once on eBay...

Pre-Wire Requirements - Elk M1 Gold Alarm Panel

The M1 comes with one speaker for interior announcements and alarms. The Elk can also output to a Russound CAA66 whole house audio system which is pretty cool.   Don't forget to give some consideration to your power supply and/or all those wall warts!

    Hardwired lighting systems for Elk

Do or Do Not.  There is no try.  Those are two HA controller systmes I've never heard of.   Universal Devices ISY994i works very well with ELK and visa versa.  Plus you can choose between different protocols, Insteon, Z-Wave or Zigbee.
