As you may have heard, Roger Ebert has been making some headlines now that he has the ability to communite again with his voice. In case you aren't familiar with his history, surgery complications took away his ability to speak, so a Scottisch Text-To-Speech company (CereProc) got together with him, and went through 10 years of recordings, taken from appearances on TV, DVD, etc., to build a new computer voice which would sound like him. It sounds like they somewhat succeeded, eventho I think the voices offered by companies such s Neospeech, Babelsoft, AT&T and others sound more natural (which I think is what they were going for). Check out the article for a quick Q&A with teh company behind this technology.

The ZigBee Alliance has made the ZigBee Home Automation and ZigBee Remote Control protocol now available for download. Hopefully this means we'll see more compatible home automation gear on the market soon, plus it should enable the DIY crowd to build their own hardware. Full press release can be found below.

PCS has revealed more information about their new PulseWorx RF hardware, which is now available for purchase. Using energy harvesting technology created by EnOcean, the 32-bit RF hardware (315 MHz) will be able to control your UPB devices by simply tapping kinetic and solar energy. In most cases, you will never need batteries, but some of the products will support the use of batteries. PulseWorx RF depends on a plug-in RF-to-UPB gateway (officially called the Radio Frequency Interface, model # RFI-E), supporting up to 8 devices. PCS also released more info on the first devices supporting this technology and is also working on door/window, temperature and photocell sensors. Keep on reading for more info about the devices, pricing information, and the official press release.

ABC News posted a video interviewing Steve Lee from SmartHome about remotely monitoring & controlling your home. While the video won't show anything new, it's a great video if you would like to show the uninitiated what home automation is all about. Some of the hardware you might be familiar with: ELK TS-07 touch screen running ELK RMS, Panasonic IP cam, MX-3000 Universal Remote with touch screen, eo UPMC (eo a7330D I think). I was surprised to see the mention of several Z-Wave products, but not a single mention about INSTEON.

Wayne-Dalton's investment into Z-Wave is no secret, but it looks like they are working hard on several new Z-Wave products. The WDHA-30 HomeManager is a controller which will allow you to manage all your Z-Wave enabled modules from within your home or remotely using a web browser. You can also create schedules, activate scenes and monitor the status of all device. The controller is also supposed to be compatible with Z-Wave devices from other manufacturers. Some sites are advertising that this unit will run $65, but I am pretty sure that it is a price mistake. No shipping date is available yet.

It looks like SmartHome is getting ready to release a Dual-Band INSTEON 240V 30AMP load controller. They will offer 2 models, a "Normally Open Relay (2477SA1)" and a "Normally Closed Relay (2477SA2)" version. This device will let you control any device UP to 240V (think water heater, pool pumps, etc.), and comes in a nice surface mount box. Since SmartHome hasn't announced this device yet, pricing information is currently not available.
