Are there any open source/inexpensive ways of accomplishing the same as the big names?

it is important to keep in mind it's possible, depending on how they're wired, that some switches may NOT be a direct replacement. ie: no neutral

    Lilsalmon, What's the status?

Are there any open source/inexpensive ways of accomplishing the same as the big names?

Insteon devices are around $50 a piece, some more, some less, a room count is irrelevant, some people have multiple switches in a room, others just one. In addition to the switches/controllers I'd highly recommend a Universal Devices ISY (about $400) it really brings the system together well...

Roughly how much does it cost to wire up a 8 room house for HA in regards to the lights (no shades o

Well, if the wiring is existing a retrofit should be minimal, possibly not even required as long as you have a neutral everywhere. And if we're talking about a new house, it shouldn't be any more at all, just make sure that each switch gets a neutral.

Seems very odd that this would happen with two consecutive switches, just for s&$?s and giggles, why not try a third, at that point if it continues, were past the remote possibility of coincidence

    Elk questions

Thanks Lou for your detailed answers. One more question for now What kind of wire is needed for the keypad? I think I have an 8 or 10 conductor in the wall (I put it there over 10 years ago) but I can still manage to get another wire in place, my concern is that it may require a specialized...

    Elk questions

I have my whole home setup with insteon lighting and an ISY controller with the web module, an a port server. The wife wants to get a security system, and I think it might make a lot of sense to go with the Elk M1GSYS4S Gold Security System. Researching it a bit, I have some questions 1) Am I...

    INsteon Swichlinc 2476d - Won't Stay Lit / On

First let me start off by saying that you might be better off posting to UD's forum. And, now unfortunately, I'll start with asking questions. You say the ISY is hooked up and working fine, but what is exactly working if you don't even have the first SLD working properly? After a factory reset...

Adding stereo speakers to a 5.1 system

What are some ways to mirror sources? The Sony avr as an additional input, but then you'd only be able to listen to one source at the same time, if I linked the two receivers that way.

Adding stereo speakers to a 5.1 system

That spec sheet may be the wrong if it says there's a headphone jack. The owner said there isnt one, maybe I got the model wrong, or maybe owner is wrong, but I don't want to insult his intelligence, so can't ask to have a look for myself. What you thought might be the deal breaker wouldve...

Adding stereo speakers to a 5.1 system

Doh.... That's it! Headphone jack, I'm only looking for two channel on the second zone, and it's for listening to one zone OR the other, never both simultaneously. If by chance the guy wants both zones at the same time he'll get by w/o 5.1 on main zone for time being. Thanks

Adding stereo speakers to a 5.1 system

I agree, and would suggest exactly that, if the system only had a line out! I remember seeing a speaker selector for surround systems once, I think it was a Niles, almost antiquated by now, but useful if I could only find one.

Looking for something to push a button automatically

I understand where you ultimately want to end up, but your path just seems all wrong to me. For example, remote start already exists for a car, why not get a second remote, and wire in a contact closure controlled by a HA system, same could be done with a garage door opener. And if you want to...

    Insteon Software Controller recomendations?

+ 1 on the ISY, I'm far from a computer programmer in any sense, but have it controlling IR through an iTach, RS232 through a port server, and HTTP commands (or network) in addition to the standard insteon protocol. I use my iPad with iRule, a standard IR remote and an x-10 keychain fob to...
