I have solved it.    I changed the Upnp listening port to 50099 instead of the default 50000 and that seems to have done the trick

I have picked up Nortel/baystack 24 port Poe switches for less than $100 shipped on ebay. 2 of the 3 I have purchased were BNIB. I believe the model was 460-pwr. They are managed switches for a commercial environment.... I'm very happy with mine.

To me, it would make much more sense to use a raspberry pi attached to a kinect, with a well documented messaging system to make a modular component that would talk with many different automation systems....
