    Gas Sensor

I have not purchased mine but downloaded the manual for the unit here: http://selector.3m.com/selector/us/en/heal...eets/shgd2a.pdf This is what it says: "LOCATION: If the gas used is natural gas (methane) mount the GD-2A on a wall about one foot down from the ceiling. If the gas used is...

Camera to identify faces at 52' (in daylight)

Why not go out and take a picture with any camera you have at multiple focal points and report back? That is how I tested what kind of lenses I needed for my CCTV cameras. Most cameras also let you set the resolution. So you can choose say, 3 megapixels to match the Mobotix.

    Camera Advice

I debated the same for a while and then decided on IP camera/POE cat-5. The technology is only going to get better and cheaper in the future. Analog cameras on the other hand, are stuck where they are.

    Cordless phone wall wart removal

I would go stranded since that is probably what is in your current transformer. Solid wire and stranded are harder to mate but certainly workable.. And no, there is no harm at all in using 18. Since it is low voltage, as long as you can access the splice should it go bad, you can do anything...

    Automated Recirculating Hot Water System

It doesn't introduce it itself. But should you get air into your pipes (e.g. water being shut off by the city, etc.), then some of it gets trapped in the pump. You will hear the noise. At least a while until the impeller self destructs as it did in ours. Of note, there is a way to mount...

    Automated Recirculating Hot Water System

I am also and engineer and have the same issue :). But work they do. We have one top of our hot water heater and it makes a huge difference on how long it takes for the water to get hot at the top. So much so that I was getting beat up hourly when ours broke and had to get it fixed. They do...

    Cordless phone wall wart removal

Can you see how many amps the transformer puts out? That would let us compute the voltage drop and give a more precise answer. Otherwise, 20 guage wire will have 0.2 volt drop assuming 1 amp current usage and will likely work. Of course, be sure to test it before running it behind the wall :).

new Insteon generation that uses less power?

No data about Insteon but Crestron keypads use about 3 watts. I am surprised that anything they use would take up 7 watts just for the microprocessor. I wonder if they are including switch losses and now include some kind of relay to eliminate that when powered off....

    DLNA vs UPnP

Actually, there is a DNLA server in current Windows Media Player. So you don't need to wait until Windows 7 to get that ability. They are orthogonoal concepts. UPnP is for device discovery. You can for example, discover your sever from a client. But it does not stipulate any compatibility...

    12v power supply question

Your only risk is that should something short out in the camera, the higher current supply will cook it good :). Let's hope it has a fuse of sorts to avoid this....

    Cat5 to Outlets

You can do all of that with Cat-5e as it also supports gigabit network. That said, I agree that crosstalk is lower on cat-6 so for applications such as HDMI over such wires, cat-6 provides better reliability and longer distance runs typically.

    staircase sensor

Hello everyone. I had read some place about sensors you plant during construction under the staircase so that if anyone steps on it anywhere, it can trigger a switch to turn on lights, etc. I have done a ton of searching here and other forums and can't seem to find anything. Apparently it is...

I know it's been discussed 1000 times, Omni or Elk

I am super anxious to try it. The thing I have not yet figured out is how to wall mount it. It seems to have a swivel stand and a power jack that comes out 90 degrees! Hope they have solid plans to roll out in US instead of just Europe....

    Home Automation Information

That is true. The competing HAI folks hang around another forum: http://www.worthingtondistribution.com/cgi...s/yabb2/YaBB.pl. The feel of the two are different but support is there for either product.
