Congratulations to Elk Products and their Elk M1 Gold hardware platform.

Home Security Hardware of the Year
Elk M1 (Elk Products Website)
The Home Security Hardware of the Year Award for 2008 goes to the Elk M1 controller. Well, a lot of the reasons the Elk won this award are the same as to why it won the Home Automation Hardware of the Year Award, and that is it can do BOTH! Most of our forum members require hardware that can handle home automation and security tasks, so it only makes sense to purchase a system that can handle these requirements with one system. Congrats again go out to Elk Products for their Elk M1 Gold platform.

Sigma Signs Definitive Agreement for Acquisition of Zensys |
| Posted by Dan (electron) - 12-19-08 11:41 - 4 comments |
|
Not sure if this is a good thing, but it looks like Sigma Designs has aquired Zensys (Z-Wave). Thanks to everyone for the tip, I was a little busy yesterday, and didn't get a chance to post this. QUOTE MILPITAS, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sigma Designs (Nasdaq:SIGM), a leader in digital media processor SoC’s for consumer electronics, today announced that it has signed a definitive agreement to acquire Zensys Holdings Corporation, a wireless start-up company. Zensys, headquartered in Fremont, California, is an innovative developer of single-chip RF solutions called Z-Wave® that has already been designed into over 250 smart home products world-wide.
Consumers throughout the world have been embracing an increasing number of devices placed under electronic control in their homes. As more of these disparate devices come into the home, the various types of technologies used by manufacturers have provided limited interoperability, creating a confusing landscape for the consumer. Moving to the next generation, home products are trending toward more intelligent solutions that are interoperable as well as accessible through the Internet. Although wireless RF is commonly regarded as the base technology for these next generation home products, there is a need for a universal RF standard that establishes a common protocol for remote control and monitoring coupled with a simple, low-cost RF implementation that enables widespread use.
In response to this market situation, Zensys has developed Z-Wave®, a solution designed to provide manufacturers with an intelligent and interoperable standard that has been incorporated into over 250 household products by more than 60 world-class suppliers Z-Wave® establishes a wireless mesh network that transforms virtually any electronic device into an intelligent networked device that can be controlled and monitored wirelessly, and can seamlessly interact with other home devices and systems. These networked devices can then be accessed through a gateway or set-top box to enable Internet based monitoring and control of the entire range of devices in the home. The devices are implemented using a family of low-cost, low-power integrated RF transceiver chips embedded with Z-Wave®, along with a suite of development tools and services designed to make it easy to create compelling wireless consumer products. These products include home audio/video entertainment, lighting and appliance control, energy management, access and security control, and building automation, among others.
Zensys was founded in 1999 to develop wireless solutions for the emerging home automation and remote control markets. Over its 10-year history, Zensys has developed a line of RF transceiver chips and the Z-Wave® wireless mesh network ecosystem, which has been designed into more household products than any other competing standard. The Z-Wave® Alliance, an industry consortium founded by Zensys, administers and promotes this standard. Zensys is currently shipping over a million RF transceiver chips per year into a widening range of consumer devices.
Upon completion of the acquisition, Zensys’ headquarters will be physically merged into the headquarters of Sigma Designs in the neighboring city of Milpitas. Zensys also has an R&D center located in Copenhagen, Denmark, housing all engineering and operations personnel, which will remain in place. The group currently employs 33 people, 23 of which are engineers.
“The Zensys acquisition provides a very attractive business and technology addition for Sigma at multiple levels,” said Thinh Tran, chairman and CEO of Sigma Designs. “First, the Zensys family of consumer chips will add a new layer of revenue growth for Sigma. Second, we believe this class of extremely efficient and low cost RF technology will become pervasive in many more types of future home products. Finally, we see a strong synergy with our set-top box offerings as the world moves toward IP-based video delivery and providers are able to establish platform extensions for additional services.”
Under the terms of the merger agreement, Sigma Designs will make an undisclosed cash payment for the acquisition of Zensys. The acquisition is subject to various standard closing conditions and is expected to close by the end of December.
Safe Harbor Statement
This press release contains forward-looking statements within the meaning of Section 27A of the Securities Act of 1933 and Section 21E of the Securities Exchange Act of 1934, including statements regarding trends in household products, the anticipated benefits of the proposed acquisition of Zensys and the consummation of the acquisition. Actual results may vary materially due to a number of factors including, but not limited to, Sigma’s ability to effectively integrate an acquired business and technologies, worldwide economic conditions, consumer reaction to new products and services being offered by Sigma as a result of the acquisition, and alternative offerings by competitors. Other risk factors are detailed from time to time in Sigma’s SEC reports, including its quarterly report on Form 10-Q as filed December 11, 2008. Readers are cautioned not to place undue reliance on these forward-looking statements, which speak only as of the date hereof. Sigma undertakes no obligation to publicly release or otherwise disclose the result of any revision to these forward-looking statements that may be made as a result of events or circumstances after the date hereof or to reflect the occurrence of unanticipated events.
About Sigma Designs, Inc. Sigma Designs is a leading fabless provider of highly integrated system-on-chip, or SoC, solutions that are used to deliver multimedia entertainment throughout the home. I am not sure how I managed to forget posting about this, but SAI released a dual load dimmer switch, allowing you to consolidate switches, while still being able to support the universal faceplate options. Here's the press release: QUOTE SAN DIEGO, CA – November 18, 2008 – www.Simply-Automated.com, Simply Automated, an industry leader in home automation lighting and control, announces availability of a new Dual Output, Universal Powerline Bus (UPB) Dimmer-Transceiver Switch Base (model US22-40) with Universal faceplate options to reduce wall-switch clutter and enhance convenience of lighting control and home automation. Residential lighting is enhanced by turning on one, two, or a group of UPB controlled lights at the push of a button or rocker. The Dual Output, Universal Dimmer makes lighting control more convenient and elegant than ever before. With two 600 Watt outputs, the number of light switches at an entryway, great-room or even bathroom may be reduce by 50%. Instead of having two, four or more light switches stretching across a wall, the home owner can have all the needed lighting controls in half the space. Simply Automated’s unique universal faceplate technology offers the home owner 13 interchangeable faceplate choice, including single- double-, triple- or four-rocker faceplates, as well as single- or dual-rocker with 4-buttons, 4-button or 8-button faceplates. There are two button styles, thin-bar or oval, with custom button labeling options. All the faceplates are available in 6 standard colors (white, ivory, almond, light almond, brown and black). Fred Kiko, founder and President of Simply Automated, explains “with 13 faceplate options in 6 standard colors, there are now 78 available faceplate options to meet virtually any décor or lighting control needs.” The Dual Output, Universal Dimmer also includes a timer feature that can help save energy. This makes the Universal dimmer ideal for bathroom applications where lights, fan or even heat lamp controls can be doubled up in one junction box and automatically shut-off at a variety of preset times. For example, each button could have a timer preset, a rocker can have two timer presets and any lighting scene could have its’ own timer preset. Other applications for the Dual Output Dimmer include retrofit replacement of conventional dual toggle switches. Or for homes designed with lighting load control centers, the space required in the load center can be cut in half, reducing the cost of expensive load center cabinets. About Simply Automated Simply Automated, an industry leader in home automation and lighting control, offers the broadest, most cost effective, flexible assortment of lighting and home automation products in the marketplace. No new wiring is required, making our products ideal for both new and retrofit construction. An extensive line of ultra-reliable UPB-based control modules, transceiver switches and in-wall controllers allow simple, low cost installations, and provide advanced applications not applicable to RF-based systems. For additional information we invite you to visit www.Simply-Automated.com. Or you can contact us by phone during regular business hours at (800) 630-9234.

CocoonTech 2.0: Phase 2 |
| Posted by Dan (electron) - 12-10-08 12:19 - 2 comments |
|
CocoonTech 2.0 Phase 2 As mentioned in the original CocoonTech 2.0 announcement, the launch is a multi-phase project, and we are ready to launch Phase 2. Phase 2 adds the following new features: - Gallery
Finally an easy way to upload and show off your Showcase photos. This service is only meant to be used for CocoonTech related pictures, do not use this for anything else, including a backup of all your personal pictures. You can configure this feature through your 'Control Panel'. Please keep in mind that this feature will use quite a lot of disk space, so compress your files before uploading. Initially, there will also be some file size limitations, but we bump things up once everything is running smooth. Some key features:- Get notified when certain albums get updated (RSS, e-mail)
- EXIF/IPTC support
- Blog
While blogging is sometimes a overhyped word, it does have its usefulness. We are now offering each member 1 blog, and you will be able to select your own 'friendly' URL (i.e., http://www.cocoontech.com/blog/WHATEVERYOUWANT). This is a very useful feature, especially if you would like to document the process of building and wiring your home, or any other projects you might be working on. You can configure this feature through your 'Control Panel'. Some key features:- Support trackbacks, pings, RSS feed and comments
- Predefined content blocks make it easy to add more data to your blog
- Custom blocks allow you to add your own content
- Private blogs: create your own hidden blog, which can only accessed by members you have granted access to
Once we have a few blogs up and running, we will select some of the better blogs to be featured on the CocoonTech.com main page (assuming it is a public blog). - Downloads
Most people have been using our attachment feature to share files with other members in the community. This can make it difficult to find what you are looking for. Our new Downloads feature will allow us to organize all useful files with an easy to use interface. As of right now, there are 2 main categories: "Premise" and "Library". Check out the Downloads section to see what this is all about. We probably need to create more (sub) categories, but we'll do so as we see a need for them. The goal is to use this feature for all permanent and interesting files, and use the forum attachment forum to share a quick screenshot or photo. Some key features:- Easy to use interface
- Support for versioning
- Screenshot thumbnails
- Powerful search engine
If you have any questions about how to use these new features, or have any suggestions, please do not hesitate to post them. While these features are now online, they obviously will be fine tuned during the next few weeks, to make sure everyone is happy. Work on phase 3 will start soon. If you have any suggestions for new features you would like to see, please post those as well, they might be included (if they aren't already planned)!

- Don't post a link to the site on other forums, telling everyone to vote (even if they are already a registered CT member).
- Don't ask members who aren't interesting in voting to vote a certain way.
- Don't do anything else that might influence/skew the results.

Nokia Develops a Smart Home Platform to Offer Consumers New Ways to Control Their Homes With a Mobile Device |
| Posted by Dan (electron) - 12-2-08 14:27 - 2 comments |
|
ESPOO, Finland, November 27 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Nokia (NYSE: NOK) announced today it is developing a smart home platform, Nokia Home Control Center. The platform is opening a new era for networked home services and solutions. Nokia's Home Control Center will be the basis for next generation security, smart home solutions and household energy management systems. The platform is open allowing third parties to integrate their own smart home solutions and services; its core consumer value is the plug and play experience across all solution areas with high security levels built in. All solutions based on the platform can be used through a smart phone or PC locally or remotely. Consumers can monitor and control their electricity usage, switch devices on and off, and monitor different objects, such as temperature, camera, and motion. In future, entire systems within the home can be connected to the Nokia platform, including security, heating, and ventilation systems. "We see there is growth potential in the smart home market," said Teppo Paavola, Vice President, Head of Corporate Business Development, Nokia. "The home of today has intelligence everywhere, but to date there has not been a solution that is interoperable with wide range of home systems that can easily be controlled. We want to create an open solution where external partners can develop their own solutions and services on top of our platform. We believe that the mobile device is an ideal interface to control home intelligence, especially when the user is not at home." Nokia today also announced a partnership with one of Europe's biggest energy companies, RWE. The co-operation aims at developing a comprehensive solution for managing energy consumption and CO2 footage at home. This cooperation combines RWE's energy competence with Nokia's technological know-how. With this in mind, the first joint solution from Nokia and RWE on late 2009 will focus on home heating management. The product consists of a central control unit together with remote-controlled thermostats for the actual radiator. The user interface will be the PC and the mobile phone. In addition, a separate display will be available. RWE is also planning special offers combining these devices with new energy supply contracts. In a second step, Nokia and RWE are planning additional services in connection with smart meters beyond 2009. These services will provide consumers with real-time information about their energy consumption and allow them to control their energy bill remotely. "We are delighted to have secured a world-leading technology partner in Nokia for our range of smart home energy products. Our aim is to offer innovative and affordable energy-efficient solutions for every household that are simple and convenient to operate," said Carolin Reichert, Head of New Business at RWE. Further, Nokia has started working with a number of companies to define and create a solid basis for building the next generation of products that will introduce a new kind of mobile access to intelligent systems at the home. These collaboration partners include Danfoss, Delta Dore, Ensto, and Meishar Immediate Community (MIC) and Zensys. The Nokia smart home partner program is structured around five key areas which mobile access will open up, creating new opportunities for the next generation smart home. These are security, energy efficiency, wellness, construction, real estate, and smart home solutions. Nokia Home Control Center will be part of Nokia's home offering. SageTV has just announced that their next generation HD extender is now available. While adding support for 1080p, it also no longer requires a SageTV server if you are only interested in playing media from a USB drive or network based drive. On top of that, the footprint has been significantly reduced, almost matching the foot print of the small Hauppage MediaMVP SD extender. Price is still $199.95! QUOTE SageTV HD Theater lets you play your home network media in FullHD on your HDTV. Easily play your media from PC, Mac, network storage or any USB storage. The SageTV HD Theater also allows you to watch live or recorded HDTV*. Enjoy your favorite YouTube and other online videos with a press of a remote with no PC required! Also enjoy music, photos and your home video library with your SageTV HD Theater on your HDTV. With the SageTV HD Theater you get playback support for MPEG1/2/4, H.264, WMV9, VC1, MKV, MOV, AVI, FLV, AAC, MP3, WMA, FLAC, JPEG, PNG and GIF files. Setup is simple and easy; just connect the SageTV HD Theater to your TV, plug it into your home network connected to the internet and you are good to go. SageTV store

CocoonTech 2.0 has arrived! If you have been a Cocooner for while, you might have seen references to CT2. While many of you probably thought that Duke Nukem Forever would be launched before CT2, CocoonTech is happy to announce that the first phase of the CocoonTech.com 2.0 roll-out has been launched. Instead of initially implementing all of the new features at once, there will be several phases, making the launch much smoother, and making the troubleshooting process more efficient. Phase 1 features:- Logo: The official CocoonTech.com logo has been updated.
- CT.wiki: Demand for our own wiki has been very strong for a long time, and due to the fast growing rate of CocoonTech.com, it was only a given that this gets the highest priority, as it will make finding information much more efficient over present forum search methods. If you aren't familiar with what a wiki is all about, check out wikipedia.com, which is based on the exact same software CT.wiki is running.
To make things easy, you can use your forum credentials to log in to the wiki, and make changes. Wiki articles can be discussed by hitting the 'discussion tab', which will automatically create a thread if it doesn't exist. You can also use the WIKI bbcode (or use the 'Insert Special Item' in the Full Editor) if you want to include a wiki link in your forum post (i.e., W800RF32). Keep in mind that a wiki is a community project, and can not survive without your help! - HTML based chat client: If you don't like the JAVA interface, or are unable to use it because the place you are at blocks chat traffic, you should now be able to join us without any problems.
- OpenSearch: CocoonTech.com can now be added as a search engine in most popular browsers (Firefox, Internet Explorer, etc.).
- Software Tracker: Manufactures and other approved individuals will be authorized to post updates whenever they release a new (minor and major) build of their software. There is also an RSS feed available, making it very easy to learn about these new updates.
- Subscriptions:Many of our members have expressed a desire to contribute to CocoonTech, but all past offers have been refused. Now, in today's economy, and with many of the new features planned, these requests have been reconsidered and will be implemented via a membership program.
Three different membership packages have been created, and you can purchase them through your 'control panel'. Out of the box, the subscription will allow increased limits (explained in the subscription description), but in addition, you will also be able to access bonus features, only available to subscribers. The first 'bonus' feature is CT.ip, a dynamic IP client for all 'Gold' and 'Platinum' supporters. This feature will give you your own subdomain using the cocoontech.net domain (i.e., myhouse.cocoontech.net) A very lightweight client, running on your computer (single .exe file, no install required) will update our Cocoontech servers whenever your IP changes, thus enabling your subdomain to always accurately point to your system. Many more bonus features are planned, as a 'Thank You' for supporting CocoonTech.com.
Please note that our non-subscribed membership will still be able to view the CocoonTech forums as they have in the past, and will be able to access any new data in the future (Wiki and other new features). This subscription program is all about supporting CocoonTech.com, and not restricting access to the very valuable data.
Phase 2 will be launched soon!
