Broken O2, howto siren from Output 3

I have an Elk M1G with a busted output 2 -- one day siren started going off and wouldn't stop until it was unplugged. If a speaker is plugged in, the on board siren noise is faint and kills speakers...busted.

Accordingly, I need to use output 3 to turn on my outdoor sirens. How? Where do I connect the + and - of the siren to the Elk (com, n/o, or n/c)? I know how to use a rule to turn on output 3, but I need power to run to the siren.

Sorry for the newbie type question, but I'm learning.
 
Just to put this out there, I hope you double-checked to make sure the output 2 is set correctly? It's actually not uncommon for the faint siren noise depending on your speaker - the supervisory power is enough to cause a bit of noise - sometimes needs to be suppressed by adding a resistor across the + and -.

To do what you're asking above though, it's the same as adding a Piezo Screamer or a strobe or other... typically you'd get your + from the +VAUX, and then for the negative, you'd loop your negative through the Common of Out3 and connect the - of the siren to the NO on Out3. Then when you turn on the siren rule, it connects the - and off it goes.

Lastly, did you contact Elk? They're really good about repairing boards if something shorts out - no guarantees, but it certainly doesn't hurt to ask.

---O2 is set correctly from what I can tell, the siren noise isn't faint, it's the full volume of the siren.

Lastly, did you contact Elk? They're really good about repairing boards if something shorts out - no guarantees, but it certainly doesn't hurt to ask.
----Yes, I think they would have changed/repaired the board; however, they are going to send me a siren to change out a speaker as an initial option (my suggestion really). ELK has the best customer service.
 
Yeah their service is top-notch...

Technically you can usually convert a siren to a speaker with a pair of wire cutters - all a Siren consists of is a speaker with a siren driver attached; bypass the driver and you have a speaker.

Either way the above directions work too - I do that for strobes and piezo screamers.
 
Try that with a piezo screamer :nono: You'll be sleeping in your car! Needless to say, I do my testing while the wife/kids are gone.

I was picking up some stuff for my dad's new security system at my local LV shop and they were out of the MPI-47 I usually get, but did have some little 10mA 95dB piezo for less than $2 so I figured what the heck I'll get 1 and see what it can do. Brought it to my father's and wired it across a car battery jump starter (didn't have the panel/battery yet) and turned it on. It was annoying at best. Then wired in the Moose and told him to cover his ears! :D
 
My local ADI branch doesn't have any GE screamers in stock. How do they compare to the ATW products like the bloodhound?
Would also be cool to do a piezo/strobe (doberman) on the shed - obviously, the current draw would be a lot more with a strobe.

Do an aux power calculation with all the items on your panel in alarm/active condition. If you exceed 1A, you need a supply,.
 
I'm assuming you were able to test the panel in alarm mode while out2 was working and never had an overload issue, correct?
Has the load changed at all from then to now? I'm curious because there is no definite answer as to how much power the panel can drive safely in alarm mode when adding up vaux, out1, and out2. Connecting a high power siren to vaux won't work as it's limited to only 1A.

--No, I never tested because I never had an overload issue (that I'm aware of).

--The load on the whole system would have changed because since out2 went out, I added a keypad and another speaker on out1.

Connecting a high power siren to vaux won't work as it's limited to only 1A -- That's interesting, even with the overload, I can drive an elk 45 (1.2 amps) and elk ss30 (1 amp) on out 3 using vaux. I get the overload even with just the ss30.
 
The definate answer is 1A, it's in the installation manual, albeit in small type.

The overload on the panel may not trip the PTC, however, for short periods, make up current and amperage can be drawn from the battery, which is what I'd assume is happening but I'd defer to Elk's engineers for a true answer.

OUT 1 is speaker, so that isn't going to be factored into a current calc. OUT 2, if you change to speaker output with resistor jumping, 0 voltage and current, so the remainder is coming from the panel.
