Thanks to everyone for the tips and corrections, there are now 45 home automation applications on the Home Automation Software List. I'm fairly sure this list is one of the most comprehensive lists on the internet, but I am still looking around on a daily basis. If you can think of an application which isn't on the list yet, or see errors, please report this, it helps everyone.
It's pretty interesting to learn what is out there, there are some real good open source projects on this list which definitely got my attention (such as DomotiGa), while commercial solutions such as ECS and Indigo look pretty promising as well. While I am still trying to figure out some layout/design issues, I definitely recommend you take a look at the list and explore some of these solutions.
