Keyless Entry Options - Back Door

I am having a new home constructed.

My new home is going to have a carport. So when I walk to my back door every day with my 2 kids, car seat and all of their stuff, I dont want to put all of that down and put a key in the door and open it - then pick all of the stuff up and go in. Is there an inexpensive option for a keyless entry? I would prefer a key fob or something like that.

Might be a bit much to build a whole z-wave system around one remote door lock. If you're intending to do that anyway then ok. Otherwise look at the remote deadbolts by Morning Industries http://www.google.com/search?q=morning+remote+deadbolt&tbs=shop%3A1&aq=f

A review was recently posted from ISC that showed a nice little biometric keyfob that's pretty cool - could be hooked to an electrified deadbold. Also, ZWave with the kwikset deadbolds and a Vera isn't a bad way to go if you figure out a good way to input a remote. I have a handful of ideas to integrate anything from a HomeLink transmitter to a biometric keyfob for triggering the kwikset deadbolt and/or handle to unlock. If that's of interest I can share some tricks. Is there any other automation you want to do? Shared components make everything easier.

There are probably many solutions here, but if you are already using a wireless radio for wireless sensors, then its easy to add keyfob support. I use mine to open the garage door, turn the alarm on and off, and unlock the door. These can be combined so one click does it all. Why not just have the door unlock when the system is disarmed? I also have a keypad/RFID received at the door so I can unlock it should I not have the keyfob it me.

has anyone tried to input a code with their hands full! I just want it to be easy and inexpensive... just want to turn the knob and go into my home. I dont think i will have any other automation except for the garage door opener. Can it be tied into the garage door opener so when I open the garage door on the carport the back door unlocks?

Carport around here generally implies open/covered space...but you mentioned garage door... So is this a secured door inside a garage, or is this a detached garage? Just wondering if this door is outside or what the full situation is.

Yes, the carport will have a garage door with an open wall on the side (per codes of the city I live in) - I will eventually make it a detached garage (enclose it fully).

I drive into the carport, walk through the carport to my back deck and to the back door of my home (the one i want a solution for)

OK - I'm going to have to think about it a little since you don't have anything existing to work with or anything else you want to automate.

I'm definitely concerned about security - if you interface anything in the garage then someone can walk into the garage and short the wires and unlock your doors.

Since you don't have any other Home Automation, what about something simple like this: http://www.smarthome.com/51890N/RF-Remote-Controlled-Keyless-Entry-Deadbolt-Satin-Nickel-RF-01SN/p.aspx ?? There are a few variants that list just using a keyfob like you listed above.

Also I'm not sure if you are planning for the future with kids or if you're moving the kids and toys you have now to the new place... but I've never been successful getting 2 kids, a carseat, and all their crap - in one trip... If they're awake, I take the kids first then come back for the crap; if they're asleep, I take the crap in then come back for the kids. Seems that 2nd trip is inevitable for me and I've noticed little difference if I come in through the unlocked garage door vs. coming in through the front door where I have to use keys. And I've gotten pretty talented at carrying both kids into daycare through the man-trap, entering my door code; and carrying the day's supplies - without setting anyone/anything down. B)

I have actually gotten pretty talented as well - I have a 4yr old and 5 month old. I can take my 4 yr old out of the car, pickup all of their crap, pickup the car seat and get everyone inside in one trip. thus the reason for my question.
