ELK Shipping Delays?

I have a few items out on back-order from a big ELK trade distributor from back in early April. They are now telling me Elk is not shipping until first week in May. They made it sound like they have not gotten anything from elk in 30 days. Are any others that deal with trade distributors having these kind of problems?

I dont know specifically why with ELK but I have seen that with Kwikset, Tripplite, Honeywell, GE etc in the past few months.

Many manufacturers are having difficulty getting some components (it only takes one to not be able to make a product).

I know where I work we are seeing up to 50 weeks lead time on some components from some manufacturers in China mostly due to labor and power shortages. Obviously no end product mfg will wait that long and are probably doing what we are doing and evaluating equivalent components from other sources to use. That process can take weeks to evaluate and then get parts.

Quick example we could not get a red LED that we use in a couple of keypads. We were out of production for a few weeks on those models before we could test and get inventory from another mfg (we had 2 or 3 sources and all were out of stock for months). Imagine something more critical then an LED such as a micro which could take months to evaluate.

Like I said I dont know why you are seeing what you are seeing from ELK but I know that a lot of mfg's are struggling with various problems beyond their control. The disaster in Japan will compound those problems for the next year or so.

Over in the X10 forums. The manufacturer of the XTBM and XTB-IIR told us one of his back ordered parts. When from mid July to 92 weeks.

92 weeks is the worst i have heard but I believe it. Actually we have had a few mfg discontinue parts with no notice also.

It is a very different world than a year ago.

Yes that is also true. Tantalum is supposedly also in short supply causing tantalum cap prices to skyrocket.

Relays have had long lead times for a year now. One reason us a material used in the contacts.

I am not aware of any major shortage. There may be an item or two that has a production delay, but generally everything is shipping. If a distributor has not received a shipment in 30 days, there could be an accounting issue.

I placed an order and recieved parts within a few days from my online supplier just a week or so ago without problems.
