If you are still within the 30 day window, you might be able to swap your phone. What HA software do you use? Some of the popular packages offer a (secure( web interface, which might be an option.

ELK's statement:
QUOTE
There have been a lot of Cocoontech users that are trying to understand what is happening at Elk so I will try to explain. We do monitor the site as we understand it to be a great place for M1 consumers to get help from one another so we try to make sure the help given is accurate. However, we respect that it is YOUR site and not a place for our sales and marketing department to boost sales or add editorial comment if someone wants to vent.

Regarding the new website, we request your patience. Our goal was to update the look on our website and replace the old M1 Dealer site. Knowing this was a huge project that would distract us from providing service to our customers; we sought out a local provider to give us a quicker turnaround. This did not allow the login from the old M1 Dealer site to be used on the new site.

Most of you can understand with anything new there are hiccups. We are working through those as fast as we can. Logins and passwords were part of the default messages in the new web software, but we understood your concerns and have changed those default messages so your information is not emailed out.

Even though we designed our products for the professional installer and only have the bandwidth to technically support the professional installer, we have NOT forgotten that there is a very knowledgeable DIY community that chose to install their own M1 system. In fact, we only authorize retailers that agree to provide technical support to the DIY community, because we want you to have technical support. We are not avoiding nor trying to “lock out” the DIY’s. As long as you provide us with the panel’s serial number and where it was purchased, you will receive access to all documentation and downloads needed to install, update, and manage your M1 system. Once that is done and you receive confirmation of your login access, there is nothing hidden that pertains to supporting your system. Some are concerned that we decided not to include a product forum on our site, but the Cocoontech site is very good and our limited resources prohibit us from monitoring a collection of sites. Again, if you are an M1 consumer, you will have access to all documentation and downloads that you need to install, update, and manage your M1 system.

We hope this helps you to understand that we have not changed our position on our customers just because we chose to provide an updated look to our website.

Most people have an add-on module (or USB nowadays) which adds more serial ports to their PC. I personally have a network based unit, which gives me 4 extra serial ports per expander, and allows me to place it in a remote location since all I need is network access.

No matter what solution you go with, make sure you go with one which has a PROVEN track record (quickly narrows it down to ELK) and is extremely durable. I did my research, and based on feedback from installers and other people, I went with the ELK model. It's expensive, but at least I can sleep, not having to worry if the valve will fail sometime in the near future.

What phone do you have? I personally connect with an SSH client to my network at home, and use tunneling in order to get secure remote access. I did this on my Windows Mobile phone, and I am now doing this on my Droid as well (see the ElkDroid video on the front page for an example). VPN is probably the easiest way of doing this, you just need a router which supports it.

ELK has been telling DIY people to use CocoonTech.com as a resource for many years, this hasn't changed. In fact, their own forums were very quiet compared with this one. From what I can tell, nothing has changed.

I just got off the phone with ELK, and besides the look, nothing has changed. Basically, a 3rd party is involved with the website, which caused some confusion. A statement will be posted soon, but after talking to ELK myself, I am convinced there is nothing to worry about.

While looking for 'pigtails' so I can power all my cameras, I found (and ordered) this item which seems to match the dimensions of the plug required for powering most CCTV cameras:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewI...em=200490764850

That seller offers an even bigger discount for larger quantities, or you can buy them 1 at a time.

In case anyone is wondering, the standard size seems to be 2.1mm ID x 5.5mm OD.

Closing this thread now, since my warning got ignored. HeyYou, you are more than welcome to start a new thread if you have more questions. To anyone thinking about continuing the attacks/flaming in another thread, think again, I am done with asking nicely.

HeyYou,

As you can tell, this is a very HOT topic. I would suggest you try what you purchased, and see if it works for you. There are plenty of people who are very happy with INSTEON, while every technology will have users who ran into major issues. SH's initial response to some of the issues was disappointing, but it looks like they are at least trying to rectify some of these issues.

I'd like to ask everyone to keep things relaxed, and relevant to HeyYou's original question. Since he already read all of the INSTEON posts, there is no need to rehash the old. I definitely don't want to see this thread turn into a flamewar, as I would be forced to close it (and I REALLY hate doing that).

I am still happy with the Vitek EH8 system I have, and it does support all smartphones without requiring quicktime. I took a few days off next week so I can finish that review everyone is waiting for wink.gif

Has anyone figured out yet what Level 3 is? I was approved for Level 1 and 2, and seem to have access to everything (but maybe they are just not showing Level 3 functions to begin with)

There is definitely another company involved (at least for the e-mail marketing). That said, this is why you use strong passwords everywhere, and make sure they aren't similar ANYWHERE. Granted, this could lead to hundreds of passwords you have to remember, but that's why you use KeePass wink.gif

I spoke with the owner several years back, it really did sound interesting, and they pushed this technology hard, getting many media outlets to cover it. In the end, I stopped getting responses to my e-mails, and not a single peep from them anywhere else either. IMO, this is vaporware until proven otherwise.

If you want to interface an interesting standard, look at the new ZigBee home automation profiles.

Only thing I can think of, that's easy and free, is to use twitter (set it private), since it supports SMS.

I actually will be doing the same thing soon. I am hoping I can just use a CdS photocell (check out some of the tutorials using this simple piece of hardware), and poll the input (it's just an analog sensor, which you can read by looking at the voltage) every few minutes using the ELK M1. Hopefully the HAI panel supports monitoring voltage as well.

Barney, new users have a few limitations to deal with, in order to combat spammers (seems to work well). That said, I just upgraded your access, since you obviously aren't a bot wink.gif

As for the app, it works pretty well, I had to use it today to control my pool pump while 30 miles away, pretty handy!

If you search for 'seized', you'll see others have run into this as well. I would contact them first, just to make sure you aren't sending it in for nothing, but it sounds like they are able to repair this type of problem.

It's definitely not my favorite design/layout either, but I am assuming it is a project still under construction (or they are trying to scare the DIY folks away).
